Children's hospital to curtail services when demand drops
The Children's University Hospital in Temple Street has said it plans to curtail services at certain times of the year when demand for its services drops, writes ALISON HEALY.
Mona Baker, acting chief executive at the Dublin hospital, said the curtailment of services would coincide with times of public holidays such as Good Friday and Easter week, the August bank holiday weekend and the Christmas and New Year break.
“Following a review of hospital activity there is a natural dip in activity at these times,” she said.
Services would be curtailed for approximately 18 working days.
Talks resume over Aer Lingus dispute
Talks between management and trade union representatives in the Aer Lingus dispute will recommence at the Labour Relations Commission today.
The talks broke up on Friday without agreement but both sides kept in touch with the commission over the weekend. The dispute over rosters is in now in its third week. Almost 300 cabin crew have been taken off the payroll and dozens of flights cancelled in the dispute.
Separately, the airline said that all its flights to continental Europe from Dublin will operate from the new T2 terminal at Dublin airport from tomorrow.
Five evacuated due to fire at Mountjoy
Prison officers were forced to evacuate five inmates from a basement cell in Dublin's Mountjoy Prison after one of the prisoners set fire to bedding, writes CONOR LALLY.
Prison sources said when five inmates were locked into their communal cell on Saturday evening a dispute arose about what they should watch on the television.
During the course of that row one of the inmates set fire to his bedding at about 7.30pm. Smoke filled the cell and the corridor outside.
The five prisoners were taken to the Mater hospital on Dublin’s North Circular Road where they were treated for smoke inhalation.
Woman dies in apartment fire in Dublin
Gardaí are investigating a fire in Dublin city centre on Saturday morning in which a woman (29) died.
The fire was discovered at about 1.45am at an apartment at Temple Place, Grenville Street. The woman, who was the only occupant in the apartment, was found dead at the scene.
The blaze was contained by Dublin Fire Brigade. The woman’s body was removed to Dublin city morgue for a postmortem. Witnesses have been asked to contact gardaí at 01-6668400 or the Garda confidential line on 1800-666 111.
