Plan to deal with Kildare dump risk

The Environmental Protection Agency is expected to announce a plan tomorrow to deal with the long-term disposal of a dump in Co Kildare where a fire has been burning for the past 10 days.

The fire at the Kerdiffstown waste facility near Naas has been described as an “environmental emergency” by Kildare County Council.

Farmer hit by machinery dies 

An elderly farmer died at the weekend after he was struck by heavy machinery on his farm in Co Limerick, writes Kathryn Hayes.

John Halpin (72), Coolroe, Kilmallock, was pronounced dead at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital following the incident at 11am on Saturday.Gardaí in Bruff are investigating the incident and the Health and Safety Authority was also notified. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen, and his children, Noel, Marie and Brendan. His funeral takes place at noon tomorrow at St Peter and Paul’s Church, Kilmallock.

Motorcyclist dies following collision

A motorcyclist died in hospital yesterday, following a collision near Naas, Co Kildare.

The man in his 40s was involved in a collision with a car on the R411 Naas to Ballymore Eustace Road at about 3.20pm. He was taken to Naas hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Anyone with information is asked to contact Naas Garda station 045-884300.
