Bailey witness on driving charge

A west Cork woman was fined €500 and disqualified from driving for 12 months after pleading guilty yesterday to driving without insurance, failing to produce insurance, driving without tax and failing to display tax at Ballylongley, Bandon on April 18th.

Marie Farrell, Ardmanagh, Schull, through her solicitor, told the court the family car had broken down and she needed to take her daughter, Tara, for a hospital appointment.

Ms Farrell was a witness at the Ian Bailey libel action and later admitted that she had given false evidence. She testified in 2003 that she saw Ian Bailey at Kealfadda Bridge on the night that Sophie Toscan du Plantier was murdered in Toormore in west Cork. But last October Ms Farrell said her testimony was false.

Ms Farrell said she was a named driver on her husband's policy for the family car and when she took another car belonging to her husband, she believed she was covered by his policy.
