Jury in man's murder trial sent to hotel

A jury in the trial of a man charged with the murder of his partner near Craughwell, Co Galway, two years ago, was sent to a hotel last night by Mr Justice Paul Carney sitting in the Central Criminal Court in Galway. It will resume deliberating today.

Kieran Lynch (40), Askeaton, Co Limerick, denies the murder of Catherine McEnery(35), Kilmeady, Co Limerick, at Rose Cottage, Derryhoyle Mór, between July 16th and 17th, 2005.

Bernard Madden SC, defending, said his client had been provoked and had lost control, hitting Ms McEnery with the leg of a chair.

School bus crash case adjourned

Summary cases against Bus Éireann and Meath County Council relating to the school bus crash that killed five schoolgirls have been adjourned for six months at Navan District Court.

Bus Éireann faces a summons for allegedly having a defective vehicle at Mooretown, Navan, on May 23rd, 2005. The council faces a charge under safety and welfare at work legislation.

Man guilty of arms offences

A Co Wexford man has pleaded guilty at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin to firearms offences.

Jackie Bates (56), Jacketstown House, Drinagh pleaded guilty yesterday to the unlawful possession of an improvised explosive device and 160 rounds of ammunition at Ballycogley, Co Wexford, on March 1st last year.

He also admitted possessing the ammunition at his home and having two firearms and ammunition without a firearms certificate. He was remanded on continuing bail for sentencing later

Suspended garda sent for trial

A suspended garda has been sent for trial on charges of assaulting his former partner. Brian McSharry, Bruckless, Co Donegal, was returned yesterday for trial to Donegal Circuit Court next Tuesday.

He is accused of assaulting Kathy Meehan on December 20th. He is also accused of causing €289.99 worth of damage to her artificial Christmas tree and fittings at Emerald Drive, Killybegs.

Woman jailed for striking garda

A woman who struck a young female garda more than a dozen times with the metal end of a sweeping brush has been jailed for six months.

Vicky Ryan (27), Round House Apartments, High Street, Limerick, hit Garda Roberta Guest at the apartments on December 27th last. Nancy Doran (26), Steamboat Quay, Limerick, was also jailed for six months yesterday for assaulting Garda Louise Kingston.

Man suing Leeds football club

Leeds United Football Club is to defend a claim by a Dublin man who alleges he was contracted to scout for youth talent in Ireland.

Desmond McGouran, Stannaway Avenue, Crumlin, Dublin, is suing for up to €38,000 in damages for breach of contract.
