St Stan rejects tax cuts for high earners

Sr Stanislaus Kennedy has hit out at proposals to lower tax rates for people who "don't want or need" them, saying the money would be better used developing a more inclusive society.

At an awards ceremony for voluntary effort in Killarney, she also hit out at the corporate sector for paying "lip service" to community efforts to gain cheap advertising.

"We have created a society that promotes active consumerism rather than active citizenship. A society that pays lip service to community without giving thought or debate to the structures or systems that prevent people from being actively involved in their community, is not promoting active citizenship."

Politicians who proposed tax cuts for high-income earners were not developing an inclusive society.

"Politicians who want to lower the tax rate for people at the top income levels, people who don't need lower tax rates, most of whom don't need or want lower tax rates and would prefer if the money was used and seen to be used in developing a more inclusive society, are not promoting active citizenship."

She welcomed the Government's Task Force Report on Active Citizenship launched this week but called on the Government to do more.

Fingal warning on drinking water

Residents of a new apartment development in Castleknock, Dublin, have been warned not to drink their tap water following the discovery by Fingal County Council of twice the legal limit of copper in the water, writes Olivia Kelly.

The discovery in a complex of about 70 apartments at Farmleigh Woods near Phoenix Park was made after a resident reported the death of a pet fish to the council earlier this month.

The council conducted tests and found that the contamination has not come from the public water supply but is limited to the complex. It is understood that the problem is linked to the chlorination process for the building's water system.

The council has contacted the developer, Menolly Homes, which is conducting works to remedy the problem.

At very high levels copper is toxic and can cause vomiting and diarrhoea. It can also be hazardous for people with pre-existing liver conditions.

In a statement yesterday Menolly Homes said it hoped the problem would be rectified by the end of the weekend and it would provide an alternative source of drinking water if required.

Addict committed string of robberies

A drug addict who committed a string of violent post office robberies in which knives were put to customers' throats and made off with thousands of euro has been jailed for 13 years by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Judge Michael White heard that Jason Campbell (26) stabbed an off-duty garda who confronted him during a post office robbery in Tallaght and in a separate incident held a knife to a female pensioner's throat.

Campbell (26), Donomore Crescent, Tallaght, pleaded guilty to seven armed robberies of banks, post offices and a credit union between October 2004 and March 2006.

Det Garda James Donegan, now retired, was awarded the Scott Medal for his bravery in trying to thwart the knife-wielding Campbell at Glenview post office in Tallaght on April 11th, 2005.
