Quinn fined, banned for drink-driving

Former international soccer player Niall Quinn was yesterday banned from driving for three months and fined €200 for drink-driving.

Appearing before Dublin District Court Quinn (39), Longstonerath, Naas, Co Kildare, admitted to drink-driving on the M50 in Dublin on July 29th.

Man held over Mullingar killing

A man was arrested last night in connection with the death of Michael Creighton in Mullingar.

The man, in his 20s, was taken to Mullingar Garda station where he was held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Mr Creighton (82) was found dead in his apartment on Castle Street, Mullingar, on September 4th. Relatives went to the apartment after efforts to contact him over the weekend failed.

Garda cleared of disorder charge

A garda was cleared yesterday of public order charges arising out of a row with a taxi driver about possible overcharging.

Oliver Cully, Lucan, Co Dublin, denied breach of the peace, drunkenness and obstruction of a colleague as he was being arrested.

He claimed the incident arose because he challenged the cabbie about his proposal to charge him €35 for the trip home to Lucan.

The cabbie, Michael Keenan claimed he had asked Mr Cully to leave the taxi because he felt intimidated by him.

Judge Hugh O'Donnell dismissing the charges said: "It was a storm in a teacup started by a taxi driver who wanted to overcharge".

Rival gangs throw missiles in Derry

Petrol bombs, paint bottles and stones were thrown by rival groups during sectarian clashes in Derry on Tuesday night.

The petrol bombs were thrown over a peace wall from the Loyalist Fountain Estate at houses on Upper Bennett Street.

None of the houses was damaged. Several minutes later stones and bottles of paint were thrown into the Fountain from the Upper Bennett Street-Bishop Street area. No one was injured in either incident.

In a separate incident at Irish Street, Waterside, about 50 youths gathered just before midnight near the home of an elderly Protestant couple which had been damaged in a sectarian attack last weekend.

Police officers and local community representatives resolved the situation.
