Ethiopian police arrest 43 for plotting

ADDIS ABABA - Ethiopian authorities have arrested 43 armed opposition members accused of plotting to overthrow the government, the state-run Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) said yesterday.

The report came a day after Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said a rally called by the opposition to protest against alleged fraud relating to a parliamentary election on May 15th was part of a plot to incite violence and topple the government. - (Reuters)

Mbeki criticised over Aids policy

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa's top trade unionist has criticised President Thabo Mbeki for failing to stem an Aids pandemic in the latest sign of discord between the ruling African National Congress and its labour allies.

"This lack of government leadership on HIV is a betrayal of our people and our struggle," Zwelinzima Vavi, secretary general of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), was quoted as saying in local newspapers yesterday. - (Reuters)

Swaziland king finds teen bride

MBABANE - The king of Swaziland has picked a teenage student to be his 13th bride less than a month after more than 50,000 bare-breasted virgins vied to catch his eye at the annual Reed Dance ceremony.

King Mswati III (37), presented 17-year-old Phindile Nkambule as his new wife-to-be at a traditional ceremony this weekend, where she appeared topless but donned the red feathers worn only by royalty for the first time. - (Reuters)

Sharon Osbourne still bulimic

LONDON - X Factor judge Sharon Osbourne is still battling bulimia after 35 years with the eating disorder. Ms Osbourne (52) told the Sun newspaper she gorges on pasta and ice cream before forcing herself to be sick. - (PA)
