Bomb taunt defendant fined

An unemployed man, who told a policewoman that not enough of her colleagues were killed in the 1998 Omagh bomb atrocity, was told by a resident magistrate yesterday the only reason he was not being sent to jail was because he had a previously clear criminal record.

Darren Patrick James Cassidy (22), Fanad Drive in the Creggan area of Derry, admitted in the city's Magistrates' Court to one charge of disorderly behaviour and one of assaulting a police officer. The incidents occurred on June 9th in William Street.

Imposing the maximum fine of £1,000 for the disorderly behaviour charge, the magistrate also imposed a two-month jail sentence, suspended for two years. He fined the defendant £200 for assaulting a police officer and ordered him to pay compensation of £300.
