Third Doolin drowning victim buried
The third and final victim of the triple October bank holiday drowning tragedy off Doolin, Co Clare, was buried yesterday.
Joseph O'Callaghan (34), was laid to rest in St Peter and St Paul's Church in the east Clare village of Tulla.
Members of the O'Callaghan family waited 11 days before Mr O'Callaghan's body was recovered last Thursday.
Prayers were also offered for the other two victims of the tragedy, Martin Griffin (24) and Michael Doran (31). All three were in a green Suzuki Vitara that plunged 70ft into the sea at Doonagore Bay.
Two injured in Garda car collision
Two men were taken to hospital after a collision with a Garda car involved in a drugs operation in Tralee, Co Kerry, on Saturday night.
Gardaí from a number of units were involved in an operation in Forge Cross, where a "significant quantity" of drugs, believed to be worth in the region of €20,000, was seized.
"A small chase took place. A Garda car was badly damaged. In their attempt to escape, two individuals got injured," a spokesman said. No arrests were made but a file is to go to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Meanwhile, a man has come forward to Tralee gardaí with information on a road accident that resulted in the death of Tungi Olatungi (14) on Friday morning.
Culture capital's sparkling finale
An outdoor "festival of lights" will mark the final celebrations of Cork's year as European Capital of Culture.
Solas will begin with the switching on of the city's Christmas lights on November 27th and culminate in a spectacular fireworks display on New Year's Eve.
Other activities include a large-scale outdoor event in mid-December using a number of themed elements. "Journey of Light" will incorporate a procession of light through a series of lighting and projection installations, involving artists from across the cultural spectrum.
Sionna music festival opens
Traditional singers from all over Asia and Europe overcame language barriers at the weekend in a musical performance described as a kaleidoscope of sound.
The "Gathering of Voices" marked the inaugural event in the 10-day-long Sionna festival inspired by the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick.
Singers from more than 20 countries are taking part in a week-long workshop ahead of a gala performance on November 16th in the Daghdha Dance Space on John's Square.
