Cork arts venue at restored church
A concert and arts venue at Christ Church, Cork city, is due to open next month following a multimillion euro revamp.
Three years ago Cork City Council committed to a €4.8 million refurbishment project to restore and develop Christ Church, on South Main Street.
A 1740 Georgian building, Christ Church was originally known as Holy Trinity Church. Its refurbishment includes the integration of the Triskel Arts Centre building on Tobin Street. Triskel will manage the building on behalf of the council.
Garda hurt in Ennis weekend party row
A man has been arrested and questioned by gardaí following a serious assault in Co Clare on Saturday night.
A garda was beaten across the head with her radio after it had been ripped from her jacket as she tried to break up a row at Newbridge Road, Ennis, a short distance from the local station.
Gardaí were called to the scene at about 8pm. It is understood that the row spilled out on to the street from a 21st birthday party.
The injured garda did not require hospital treatment.
A 39-year-old man was arrested early yesterday.
Cork toy store chain to close with loss of 30 jobs
A family-run business which originated as a grocery store in Co Cork in 1929 and expanded into a chain of toy shores has closed with the loss of 30 jobs,

Murphy’s World of Wonder, which originated in Mallow, Co Cork, and also had stores in Blackpool in Cork city, Midleton and Fermoy, has gone in to voluntary liquidation.
The company blamed a lack of access to credit from banks and the high costs of running a business in the current economy.
Managing director Gerald Murphy said the closure of the Mallow store represented the end of an era in the town.
He thanked the staff and customers over the years for all their support, saying the closure was a “great pity” .
The Mallow store at Monument House has been a focal point in the centre of the town since 1929.
