Lottery winner fined £200 for driving while using mobile phone

A man who won over £6 million in the UK national lottery two years ago, was fined £200 at the Magistrate’s Court in Derry yesterday after he admitted using his mobile phone while driving his Ferrari car.

Ryan Magee (28), Monnabuoy Road in Eglinton, Co Derry, was seen using his mobile phone by police officers while driving his car along Crescent Link in the Waterside area of the city last July 4th.

Mr Magee had bought the car following his cash windfall.

He was also penalised three penalty points and was fined another £50 for the non-production of his driving licence.

Defence solicitor Maeloisa Barr, who did not apply for time for his client to pay the fines, described Magee’s actions as foolish.

Watchdog may prosecute paper

The national consumer watchdog is considering a prosecution after a Sunday newspaper published an edition mimicking the front page of its rival, the

Sunday Tribune .

for a breach of the Consumer Protection Act.

There was strong criticism of the newspaper for publishing an edition on Sunday with a front page masthead and layout which replicated those of its rival.

will not be published for a number of weeks following the appointment of a receiver last week. The receiver is seeking a buyer for the newspaper. The consumer agency said today it would not be making any further comment on the issue.

Post-mortem examination

Relatives of former Thin Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore, including his brother Cliff, arrived in Spain yesterday following the death of the 58-year-old at the weekend.

An initial post-mortem examination has found he died from a suspected heart attack at the Kempinski Resort Hotel in Estepona on the Costa del Sol. Forensic experts have told a court investigating the case that he died of natural causes hours after starting a six-day holiday with his girlfriend.
