Serviceman killed in Dagestan bomb

DAGESTAN – A suicide attacker and a car bomb blast targeting police killed at least two people and wounded several yesterday in a village in Russias Dagestan region, where the Kremlin is struggling to contain an Islamist insurgency.

The regional interior ministry said the woman suicide bomber detonated explosives after approaching the building in Gubden, a village about 150km south of the provincial capital, Makhachkala.

About three hours later, a car bomb exploded near a temporary police post on the edge of the village, Russian news agencies reported. Shooting was heard and most of the lights in the village went out. – (Reuters)

Iranian shot dead at banned rally

TEHRAN – An Iranian was shot dead during a banned opposition rally in Tehran, the semi-official Fars news agency reported, blaming opposition supporters for the shooting. “One person was shot dead and several were wounded by seditionists [opposition supporters] who staged a rally in Tehran,” Fars said.

Dozens of Iranian opposition supporters had been arrested during the day while taking part in the rally to support popular uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia, an Iranian opposition website said.

Security forces fired tear-gas to scatter thousands of marchers, a witness said.
