A round-up of today's other stories in brief
Five rescued after boat's engine fails
Five people were rescued on Lough Derg in Co Clare yesterday afternoon when their 24ft cruiser suffered engine failure and began drifting dangerously close to rocks.
The RNLI lifeboat, based at Dromineer on the Tipperary side of the lake, went to the scene off Whitegate after the alarm was raised at about 3.50pm. The lifeboat had been dispatched by the Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre at Valentia Island in Co Kerry as soon as the alarm was raised.
The lifeboat arrived within eight minutes of launching and found all on board – four adults in their 40s and a 13-year-old – unharmed.
The skipper of the cruiser boat had dropped anchor to prevent his vessel being pushed aground on to nearby rocks.
Thanking the lifeboat crew, the skipper said: “I saw the lifeboat out training earlier this morning and never imagined you would be helping me in the afternoon. It’s great to know you’re there.”
Woman saved after falling from bridge
A woman who fell into Wexford harbour from the bridge at Wexford town was rescued by the local lifeboat services last evening.
The incident happened at about 7pm and the woman was taken to hospital where she was treated for hypothermia.
