Campaign to raise suicide awareness
A county councillor who lost his son to suicide before Christmas has launched a public awareness campaign in a bid to stop other families going through a similar trauma, writes John Fallon.
Peter Roche, a Fine Gael member of Galway County Council, said something tangible needed to be done as there were more than 550 suicides in Ireland each year.
His son Colin (23) died near their home in November. His girlfriend later took her own life.
Mr Roche has asked that people support the €1 1Life wristband campaign which carries a helpline number 1800 247100.

It is understood the fire began in the sitting room of the property, but its cause had not been established yesterday.
