€42,000 awarded for airport incident

A woman was been awarded just over €42,000 in damages at the High Court after being dragged for 400 metres by a passing baggage- trolley lorry which snagged her in Dublin airport.

Sharon Hall (51), a journalist, South Parade, Ravenhill Road, Belfast, sued the Dublin Airport Authority over the incident on July 9th, 2008.

The case was before the High Court via an appeal by the authority from a Circuit Court ruling.

Mr Justice Gerard Hogan was told yesterday the issue related only to assessment of damages.

Mr Justice Hogan awarded €42,378 plus costs.

Man gets seven-year sentence for sexually abusing half sister

A man has been given a seven-year sentence for sexually abusing his half-sister over a period of seven years.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, suffers from a psychiatric illness and delusions. He told gardaí he believed “everyone is a paedophile”.

The man started to abuse the victim when she was nine years old and he was 19. The now 50-year-old man pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to six charges of indecent assault and two charges of incest on dates between October 1st, 1979 and March 31st, 1986 at their Dublin home. He had no previous convictions.

Dumbrell jury to continue deliberations

The jury in the case of two Dublin brothers on trial for murder over an alleged fight a man had had with their brother will continue its deliberations today. The jurors were sent home yesterday after failing to reach a verdict in the case of Warren and Jeffrey Dumbrell after more than four hours.

The brothers, of Emmet Place, Inchicore, deny murdering Christopher Cawley at Tyrone Place flats, Inchicore, in October 2006.

Trial of man for Limerick murder

A man accused of murdering Shane Geoghegan in Limerick over two years ago is to go on trial at the Central Criminal Court today.

Barry Doyle (24), Portland Row, Dublin, and Hyde Road, Limerick, appeared briefly before the court yesterday, where he pleaded not guilty to murdering Mr Geoghegan in 2008.

Mr Geoghegan (28), a Garryowen rugby player, was shot dead in a suspected case of mistaken identity at the Kilteragh estate near Dooradoyle on November 9th of that year.

A jury of seven men and five women has been sworn in for the trial, which is expected to take up to four weeks, before Mr Justice Paul Carney.
