President to attend PSNI graduation
President Mary McAleese is today attending the passing out ceremony in Belfast for new Police Service of Northern Ireland officers, reports Gerry Moriarty.
She is attending the graduation ceremony at the police training college for 41 new officers.
She is also addressing the graduate officers and their families, and is presenting the best recruit prize, and reviewing the passing out parade.
President McAleese has met senior PSNI officers on a number of occasions and also visited PSNI headquarters in east Belfast, but this is the first time for her to attend such a graduation ceremony.
Man questioned on Newbridge death released without charge
A man was released by gardaí without charge last night after being questioned about the death of a man in Newbridge.
The 46-year-old man was arrested along with a woman on Wednesday for questioning about the death of 21-year-old Krystian Morowski. The woman (40) remained in Garda custody last night and a file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions on the man. The victim, a Polish national, was found stabbed at his home at Moorefield Park, Newbridge, Co Kildare, on Tuesday. He was taken to Naas General Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Waste staff vote for industrial action
Waste collection staff in Dublin City Council have voted for industrial action to support colleagues in Dún Laoghaire - Rathdown where controversial plans for outsourcing of services have been proposed, reports Martin Wall.
The staff in Dublin City Council are also looking for a new regulatory framework for the waste collection sector in the capital.
Siptu, which represents the 700 staff in Dublin City Council, has argued that the introduction of the outsourcing plan in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown would constitute a breach of a number of collective agreements.
Acquitted on charge of firing shot
A man alleged to have fired a shot through the window of a neighbour’s house was acquitted at Wicklow Circuit Court yesterday without the matter having to go to the jury.
Carlos Corkish (32), who had lived at The Bank, Rathnew, Co Wicklow, but now of Sallins, Co Kildare, pleaded not guilty to recklessly discharging a firearm at The Bank intending to cause harm and endangerment on August 28th, 2008. Judge Michael O’Shea directed the jury to return a not guilty verdict.
