Ex-media tycoon must stay in US
CHICAGO– A judge yesterday told former media tycoon Conrad Black to remain in the continental US while he waits for an appeals court to decide whether to throw out his 2007 fraud conviction.
Black was freed this week on a $2 million (€1.55 million) bond after serving two years’ jail for swindling newspaper holding company Hollinger International Inc. – (Reuters)
One killed in Swiss train derailment
ZURICH– One person was killed and 42 injured yesterday when Switzerland's Glacier Express tourist train derailed on its journey between Zermatt and St Moritz.
Police said 12 people were in a serious condition. Most of the passengers were Japanese. Rail disruptions, let alone accidents, are rare in Switzerland. – (AP)
Venezuela tells Colombia it will repel attacks
CARACAS– Venezuela's military warned its neighbour Colombia yesterday it was ready to repel any attacks a day after President Hugo Chavez cut ties over Bogota's charges that Venezuela was harbouring leftist Colombian guerrillas.
Mr Chavez’s severing of diplomatic relations has raised tension between Opec member Venezuela, a major supplier of oil to the US, and US ally Colombia. Their volatile Andean region has long been plagued by guerrilla armies and drug-traffickers. – (Reuters)
