Al-Aqsa clash adds to tension over holy sites
JERUSALEM– Israeli police entered the compound housing Jerusalem's al-Aqsa Mosque yesterday and fired tear gas and rubber bullets after Palestinians threw stones at visitors to the site.
The confrontation added to tension that is already running high after Israel’s announcement of a plan to restore Jewish religious sites in the West Bank. Police arrested seven Palestinians and four policemen were hurt. – (Reuters)
Turkish PM meets head of military
ISTANBUL– Turkey's prime minister Tayyip Erdogan met the head of the armed forces yesterday, two days after the arrest of two retired generals over an alleged coup plot risked renewing tension between the government and military.
