Historic touchline flags donated to Thomond Park museum

Thomond Park had another brush with history yesterday when the touchline flags from the first international rugby match played in Limerick were donated to the stadium's museum.

The flags donated by Limerick City Museum were used in 1898 when Ireland took on Wales in a match held on the grounds of Limerick Lawn Tennis Club on the Ennis Road.

They were originally given to Limerick Civic Trust by Limerick-born international Paddy Reid who was part of the 1961 Grand Slam team and still attends rugby games at Thomond.

More than 25,000 people have visited the museum at the redeveloped rugby stadium since it opened in November 2008.

Among other items on display are a replica of the 2006 Heineken Cup trophy, along with a photograph of Padre Pio which was worn by Paul O'Connell in his sock on the historic occasion.
