US al-Qaeda agent arrested in Pakistan
KARACHI – Pakistani security agents have arrested an American al-Qaeda spokesman wanted in the United States on a treason charge, Pakistani security agents said yesterday.
Adam Gadahn, the first American to be charged with treason since the second World War, has appeared in al-Qaeda videos posted on the internet threatening the US with violence. – (Reuters)
35 Somali pirates held by French
PARIS – A French frigate operating off the coast of Somalia has captured 35 pirates in just 48 hours, the French defence ministry said yesterday.
It was the biggest such haul since European Union navies started patrolling the Gulf of Aden and western Indian Ocean in December 2008 in an effort to end a spate of hijackings in the busy shipping lanes.

Kaczynski wins opposition support
WARSAW – Poland’s main opposition party yesterday endorsed President Lech Kaczynski as its candidate for re-election in presidential polls due in autumn.
According to most political analysts, Mr Kaczynski’s chances of winning re-election to another five-year term appear slim.
