Apprentice Boys will be allowed to parade past Ardoyne shops this Saturday on their way to their annual demonstration in Derry, the Parades Commission has ruled.

However, they will not be allowed to be accompanied by a band or supporters.

About 40 Apprentice Boys will be allowed to march past Ardoyne. The Shankill Star band, which has carried a banner commemorating a loyalist killer, will not be allowed to accompany them along the contentious section of the route.

The band’s banner commemorates Brian Robinson who shot dead Ardoyne man Paddy McKenna in 1989.

There is concern in Derry that tensions over the traditional Apprentice Boys demonstrations could be exploited by dissident republicans who have carried out a wave of attacks in the past week.

Sinn Féin and the SDLP oppose loyalist marches past Ardoyne and have criticised the Parades Commission determination regarding Saturday’s march.

Gilligan remanded on phone charges

John Gilligan (58) appeared before a sitting of Tullamore District Court on a charge of possessing a mobile phone in prison.

Gilligan is contesting the charge in relation to the discovery of a mobile phone at his cell in Portlaoise Prison on July 30th, 2008. If convicted under the 2007 Prisons Act he faces a possible five year sentence.

He was brought to the court under armed escort.

Following a request from Insp Joe Prendergast, Gilligan agreed to be remanded in custody until the end of August.

“Yes your honour, I don’t mind,” he told Judge Gerard Haughton. He was remanded to appear before Tullamore District Court on August 30th.
