Spanish novelist Delibes dies at 89

MADRID– Miguel Delibes, who dominated Spanish writing for more than 50 years with his mastery of the language, sensitive but realistic portrayal of downtrodden farm workers and love of nature, died yesterday. He was 89.

Politicians set aside fierce squabbling over Spain’s crisis to join in praising Delibes, whose career spanned the country’s painful recovery from civil war and its transition from a grim dictatorship to a modern European democracy.

British Airways crew to strike for seven days

LONDON– British Airways cabin crew will walk out for seven days this month after talks between the airline and unions broke down, in a dispute analysts say could cost the airline about £140 million.

The Unite union said yesterday its members would strike for three days from March 20th and for four days from March 27th, while BA removed a formal offer made to staff on Thursday and conditional on Unite not naming any strike dates.

Cabin crew will not strike over the Easter holidays in the first week of April, but Unite said if no deal was reached, more strikes could be called after Easter and beyond. – (Reuters)
