Gardaí move charity jogger off busy motorway in Co Clare

A jogger was escorted by gardaí off a busy motorway for his own safety yesterday after motorists contacted them to report a man running along a stretch of the busy M18 in Co Clare.

The unidentified man is understood to have left Shannon and had run almost 15km before a motorcycle garda intercepted him at Killoo, near Clarecastle.

It is believed that he was running for charity, and did not realise that it was illegal for him to be on the motorway.

The runner was accompanied for most of the journey by a support car. However, by the time he was stopped by the garda, the car had travelled further ahead.

The garda advised the runner of motorway restrictions and warned him about the dangers. It is not known whether the man will be prosecuted.

Limerick man who died in fire named

A man who died in a house fire in Limerick has been named as William Carroll (66), St Brendan Street, St Mary’s Park. He died in a blaze at his house shortly after 7.30pm on Tuesday.

The alarm was raised by members of the Emergency Response Unit who were patrolling the area.

The victim’s brother Timothy, who is in his 70s, was injured in the blaze and was treated at the Mid Western Regional Hospital, but he was discharged yesterday.

Mr Carroll’s burial will take place at Mount St Lawrence Old Cemetery today following 11am Mass at St Mary’s Church.

Man dies in house fire in Tralee

A man in his 60s has died in a fire in Co Kerry, making him the second person to have died in a fire in the county this week.

Seán O’Connell, a taxi driver, was the victim of a fire that broke out in a shed at the rear of a house in Connolly Park in the centre of Tralee on Tuesday night.

Gardaí are describing his death as a tragic accident.

Tralee Fire Brigade received a call at 8pm and Mr O’Connell was pronounced dead at the scene. Nobody else was injured in the fire.

It follows the death earlier that day of Ellen Reidy, who was in her 90s, and the grandmother of Kerry footballer Pádraig Reidy.
