Five books shortlisted for Irish fiction award
The internationally acclaimed novel Let the Great World Spinby Colum McCann is among the five books shortlisted last night for the Kerry Group Irish Fiction Award. The Infinities,the latest novel by 2005 Man Booker prize winner John Banville, is also among the contenders for the €15,0000 prize.
Not Untrue and Not Unkindby Ed O'Loughlin, The Space Between Usby John McKenna and Glover's Mistake by Nick Laird are also in contention.
The winner will be announced at Listowel Writers Week on June 2nd. The final five were chosen from more than 50 entries by actor Kate O’Toole and author Giles Foden
Murder inquiry after man dies in Belfast
Police in Belfast have launched a murder investigation after a man died from serious head injuries on waste ground in the west of the city.
Emergency services were called to the area, just behind Woodbourne Police station at about 2am, but the man died at the scene. The victim, who has yet to be identified, was wearing a Donegal Celtic soccer top, a cream jacket, black jeans and a Ben Sherman watch. – (PA)
Annual bursary to honour Ray Murphy
A scholarship to encourage research on philanthropy and social finance in Irish universities was announced yesterday.
The €10,000 annual bursary is open to students that intend to undertake postgraduate study at any third-level institution.
The fund is in memory of Ray Murphy, who was the former chief executive of Philanthropy Ireland and former chairman of social investment fund Clann Credo.
