Ireland cannot afford to lose its historical memory of hunger and the responsibility it gives to help others facing starvation, said President Mary McAleese
Banishing hunger in today's world will require a collective and sustained effort by people, the President told a conference organised by Gorta to mark World Food Day yesterday. "It will not be accomplished by one person or by spectators. It will be accomplished by people organising and harnessing their energies, and it needs a sustained effort . . . We almost thoughtlessly put into bins or dumps food we no longer need because for the most part we have plenty," she said.
Former councillor Paddy Lenihan dies
An uncle of Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan and of Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Conor Lenihan has died.
Paddy Lenihan of Hodson Bay, Athlone, was a brother of Longford-Westmeath TD Mary O’Rourke and of former tánaiste and minister for defence, the late Brian Lenihan. He died on Thursday at Portiuncula Hospital, Co Galway, following an illness.
He was elected as a Fianna Fáil councillor to Roscommon County Council in 1974 where he served the south Roscommon area until
1991. He is predeceased by his son Kevin and survived by his wife Bríd, sons Pádraig and Fionnbar, daughter Gráinne and sister Anne. His removal takes place tomorrow at 6.30pm to the Church of the Risen Christ, Ballybay, with Mass at noon on Monday.
Two road deaths in Cork and Kilkenny
A 41-year-old man who died when his car collided with a truck in Cork yesterday has been named as Gerard Barrett, a father of one from Farranree in Cork city.
The incident happened shortly after 9.30am on the N20 Mallow road near Rathduff.
Meanwhile, a 46-year-old woman was killed when the car she was driving crashed into a ditch in at Kildalton, near Piltown, Co Kilkenny at about 12.10am yesterday.
Two arrested after suspect device find
Two men have been arrested following the discovery of what is believed to be an explosive device in their car. The men, one from Dublin and the other from Waterford, were stooped by gardaí on the Dungarvan bypass at about 9pm.
Boy (13) missing since June found safe
A teenage boy who went missing in Kildare in June of this year has been found. Ryan Delaney (13) was last seen on June 12th, 2010, in the Newbridge area. Gardaí said last night the boy is safe and well.
