A couple were rescued on Lough Derg on the river Shannon yesterday after they got into difficulty while fishing.

Sligo Live sessions attract 30,000

Over 30,000 music people packed out the pubs, clubs and restaurants of Sligo for the annual Sligo Live sessions which generated an estimated €4 million for the local economy over the bank holiday weekend.

One of the selling points for visitors was the fact that 80 per cent of the programme during the five-day event was free.

Much to the bemusement of the crowds, one of the highlights was the world air fiddle championships, a traditional take on air guitar playing where participants indulge their inner Yehudi Menuhin by playing an imaginary instrument.

Locals Amy O’Hara and Peter Crann tied with the Quayside Orchestra to take the honours for the most passionate renditions.

Another Sligo Live highlight was the 21st birthday celebration for local band Dervish, a sell-out three hour concert.
