Brazil claims huge strides on emissions

BRASILIA – Brazil has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 34 per cent in the past five years and virtually met its 2020 target, the government has said, a month before global climate talks begin in Mexico.

Amid fading hopes for a pact at the UN climate summit in Mexico, Brazil wants to showcase its efforts and pressure others to do more. It has taken a more active role in climate talks in recent years as its diplomatic clout grew in line with the importance of its booming economy. – (Reuters)

Merkel stalker detained in psychiatric care

BERLIN – A German man who twice got past police controls and into Chancellor Angela Merkel’s weekend retreat has been detained and is in psychiatric care, a government spokesman said yesterday.

He confirmed a report in Bild newspaper saying the stalker, in his mid-40s, was detained after he twice evaded security and infiltrated the retreat, north of Berlin. He once managed to ring the doorbell when Ms Merkel was in the house.

“He appeared at times extremely agitated because she evidently did not personally answer his letters,” Bild said. – (Reuters)
