Gardaí examine scene of fire at retail park in Dundalk

Gardaí were yesterday examining the scene of an extensive fire in Dundalk that has left eight units in one of the towns largest retail parks with significant fire and smoke damage, writes Elaine Keogh.

The blaze at the North Link Retail Park on the towns inner relief road was discovered at about 7.30pm on Sunday and, according to gardaí, was concentrated in a premises selling furniture. A Garda spokesman said they were carrying out a forensic examination of the fire scene in a bid to discover the cause of the fire and whether it was accidental. He said extensive fire and smoke damage was caused to all units and traffic was diverted for some time away from the retail park.

Household waste collection privatised

A south Dublin local authority is to go ahead with the privatisation of its household waste collection after a proposal to prevent it was defeated.

Owen Keegan, county manager of Dún Laoghaire- Rathdown County Council, announced last month it would withdraw its grey and green bin waste service from July 1st. Last night the council debated a resolution tabled by Labour Party councillors directing the manager not to privatise the service.

Councillor Denis O’Callaghan said the decision to privatise was “probably the worst decision ever taken by any manager in the country”.

The resolution was supported by People Before Profit councillors Richard Boyd Barrett and Hugh Lewis, but the remaining councillors voted against it.
