Wilson warns of serious impact of cutbacks on North’s economy

Stormont Minister for Finance Sammy Wilson has warned that moves to address the massive budget deficit will have a long-term impact on Northern Ireland.

Addressing the Assembly yesterday, Mr Wilson warned: “The good years of increased year-on-year public spending have come to an end.”

He accepted the “appalling” national deficit had to be tackled and “although not of our making, the fallout will impact on this administration for many years to come and we must rise to the challenge”.

Cuts of £128 million have already been imposed by the British exchequer on Stormont, on top of other savings.

Bishops look to Saville report

The Catholic Bishop of Derry Séamus Hegarty said yesterday he hoped the Saville report would be “conclusive” and that it will not be an “either/or situation”.

In a statement last night, the Church of Ireland Bishop of Derry and Raphoe Dr Ken Good said he hoped “that in these pivotal days, we will all listen carefully” .
