Man (19) critical after assault   

A 19-year-old Co Westmeath man was in critical condition in Beaumont Hospital in Dublin last night after an assault in Mullingar, on Saturday evening.

Gardaí said the man was on his own when he was assaulted by a number of individuals, who struck him on the head with a "bladed weapon". Anyone with information is asked to contact Mullingar Garda station on 044-9384000.

Police keep republicans and marching loyalists apart in Derry

A line of police officers kept 60 republican protesters separated from 1,500 loyalists in the centre of Derry on Saturday during the annual Apprentice Boys' Lundy's Day parade, writes George Jackson.

The republicans took part in a 32 County Sovereignty Committee protest to highlight conditions in Maghaberry prison. Their single-line protest took place in Shipquay Street, just yards from the Diamond where Apprentice Boys paraded to mark the 322nd anniversary of the start of the city’s 1688 siege. Some 650 police officers were on duty for the parade and counter-demonstration, which passed off peacefully. The Apprentice Boys were unable to complete all of their traditional parade route because Wapping Lane in the Fountain area was closed to pedestrians due to snow and ice on the road.

Army disarms explosive device

Army bomb disposal experts made safe an improvised explosive device discovered yesterday morning outside a house in Tipperary.

The device was found on the footpath outside a house in Grenane Drive, Tipperary Town, shortly before 5.45am.

The device was disarmed and the scene declared safe at 6.30am. The remains of the device have been handed over to gardaí.

Man charged over cannabis seizure

A man in his 20s was due in court this morning on charges arising from the seizure of an estimated 20kg of cannabis in Dublin on Friday night.

Two men, aged 22 and 28, were arrested after gardaí seized cannabis pollen with an estimated street value of €250,000 during the search of a warehouse in Beaumont.

One of the men was released and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
