Iran hangs man for spying for Israel
TEHRAN – Iran has hanged a man convicted of spying for Israel by gathering intelligence that included how many fighter jets Iran possesses.
Ali-Akbar Siadat, who was executed at Tehran’s Evin prison at dawn yesterday, established relations with Israel’s Mossad agency in 2005, an official news agency said. – (Bloomberg)
Eight homeless die in warehouse fire
NEW ORLEANS – A blaze in an abandoned warehouse has killed eight homeless people who were burning wood in a barrel to stay warm on a freezing night.
The building was on the edge of a working-class residential neighbourhood. Authorities are trying to find out the identities of the victims. – (AP)
Sect admits Nigerian bombings
BAUCHI – A radical Islamist sect said yesterday it was behind bombings in central Nigeria and attacks on churches in the northeast that resulted in the deaths of at least 86 people.
Police said 80 people were killed in Christmas Eve bomb attacks and in clashes two days later between Muslim and Christian youths in central Nigeria. Six people were also killed when petrol bombs were thrown late that day at churches in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, in Borno state. – (Reuters)
