Gardaí appeal for witnesses to road crash

Gardaí in Dundalk have appealed for witnesses to a fatal road crash in Co Louth on Friday night.

A woman in her late 40s was travelling alone when the car she was driving hit a signpost at Dromad, on the old Dundalk to Newry road at about 10pm. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was taken to Louth County Hospital, Dundalk.

Army makes device safe

Army bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion following the discovery of a suspicious device in Coolock, Dublin, on Saturday night.

Gardaí alerted the Army following the discovery of the improvised explosive device outside a house on Edenmore Avenue shortly before 11pm on Saturday. The device was found to contain “explosive content”. The remains were handed over to gardaí and an investigation is ongoing.

Man seriously injured in attack

A 20-year-old man from Co Donegal was seriously injured in an incident in Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, early yesterday morning.

The victim was attacked outside the Ballymacmanus Bar in the town centre. He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where he underwent emergency treatment for a head wound. His condition was later described as “stable”. Gardaí interviewed a number of people early yesterday about the attack.

Two arrested over stabbing

Gardaí at Kevin Street station in Dublin are investigating the stabbing of a young man in Dublin city centre yesterday. The 19-year-old was assaulted near the Tivoli Theatre on Francis Street at 1.20am.

He was taken to St James’s Hospital. Shortly afterwards two men, aged 20 and 29, were arrested in connection with the incident. They were questioned and released without charge yesterday. A Garda spokesman said a file was being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Howth lifeboat rescues two men

The Howth lifeboat in Co Dublin rescued two men yesterday in separate incidents. The lifeboat went to the aid of a man in his 40s stranded at Whitewater Ruck, north of Baily lighthouse, yesterday morning.

He was taken to Beaumont Hospital and “was disorientated and had suffered lacerations to his back,” an RNLI spokeswoman said.

Shortly afterwards the crew came to the aid of a kite surfer who was in difficulty off Burrow beach in Sutton. He was returned safely to the beach.
