Convicted rapist gets extra 8 years

A Waterford man currently serving 10 years for raping a girl has been jailed for a further eight years for sexually assaulting her seven-year-old sister.

Just before his trial was due to start, the 54-year-old man pleaded guilty to sexual assault on the girl on November 20th, 2004. The State did not pursue 10 additional counts of sexual assault alleged to have occurred between November 12th, 2002 and December 15th, 2004.

Judge Desmond Hogan said the abuse was on "the serious end of the scale" and imposed an eight-year sentence.

Woman fined for careless driving

A woman has been found guilty of careless driving in an incident which led to the death of another woman in Offaly.

Judge Conall Gibbons found Yvonne Murphy (25) guilty of careless driving on August 4th, 2007, at Knockballyboy, Daingean.

She collided with a car being driven by Therese Herbert (53), Robertstown, Kildare, who died as a result of injuries she sustained, Tullamore District Court heard.

Judge Gibbons fined Murphy €750 and endorsed her driving licence.

Man denies sex assault on girl (14)

A jury has been told that a Co Offaly man abducted a 14-year-old girl in his car and drove her to a wooded area where she claims he sexually assaulted her.

The 45-year-old man has pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to three charges of false imprisonment, aggravated sexual assault and sexual assault in Co Offaly on November 6th, 2000.

The hearing continues before Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy and a jury.
