Gardaí in Bandon death appeal

Gardaí have appealed to the public for assistance as they launched an investigation into the death of a 38-year-old man who died yesterday in hospital after being found in collapsed on a street in Bandon, Co Cork.

The man was found by a passerby on Chapel Street at about 1.45am on Monday and was taken to Cork University Hospital.

Gardaí are hoping that a postmortem to be carried out today will help establish what happened to the man, who was originally from Cork city but who had been living in Bandon for a number of years.

Woman accused of hindering inquiry

A woman has been charged with impeding a murder investigation. She was charged at the direction of the DPP after it received a file from gardaí investigating the murder last May of Navan man David Sharkey (28).

His body was found in the boot of a car in Finglas.

Sinead Geraghty (23), Parkview, Navan, Co Meath appeared before Navan District Court yesterday.

It is alleged that on May 17th last, she impeded the apprehension or prosecution of a person she believed to be guilty of murder.

Judge Tom Fitzpatrick remanded her in custody.

Man killed by ‘flying horseshoe’

A man died after being struck in the head by a “flying horseshoe” an inquest heard yesterday.

James Byrne (84) died after he drove his car through a rope being used as a cattle barrier, which was pulled across a road and had a horseshoe tied to one end.

Garda Helen Nugent told Kilkenny Coroner’s Court that farmer Eamon Saunders told her at the scene that he had “waved him down, but he drove through it”.

The court heard Mr Byrne died after he hit the rope, tied across the road to direct cattle, on May 16th, 2007.

A jury returned a verdict of accidental death.

Man is remanded over theft of €50

A man has been remanded in custody over the theft of €50 in Dublin on Tuesday morning. Trevor Byrne (31), Annamoe Drive, Cabra, Dublin, was accused of the robbery at 2.30am on Leo Street, Dublin.

A bail hearing took place in Dublin District Court yesterday afternoon before Mr Justice Hugh O’Donnell. It was held in camera as gardaí said there were “sensitive matters” to be discussed.

Legal aid was granted and bail was refused. Mr Byrne was remanded in custody at Cloverhill Prison and is due to appear in Cloverhill Court on September 23rd.

Woman charged with false report

A woman has appeared in Dublin District Court charged with making a false report to gardaí.

Liz Jameson (54), Marian Crescent, Rathfarnham, was charged with knowingly making a false report on March 31st tending to show that an offence had been committed or to give rise to the apprehension for the safety of any persons or property.

Legal aid was granted by Justice Brian Smyth. Ms Jameson received bail with a bond of €300 cash.

The case was put forward for trial to the next sitting of Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Families evacuated after bomb alert

Fifteen families were evacuated from their homes in the Lisnaskea Road area of Roslea, Co Fermanagh, yesterday as a result of warnings about abandoned dissident republican bombs.

Police carried out a major security operation to try to discover the explosive devices which dissidents said were left in the general area.

The search took place after a 600lb bomb was discovered near Forkhill in south Armagh over a week ago. The searches were called off yesterday evening.
