Air report says crash caused by controls failure
Two men had a narrow escape when a two-seater aircraft cart-wheeled after crashing at Colehill, Co Longford, last year according to an air accident report. The crash was probably caused by failure of the control mechanism for the wing flaps on the 41-year-old single-engine Rollason Condor, the report concludes.
After taking off from Abbeyshrule aerodrome on September 2nd, the aircraft began to bank to the left. The pilot was unable to correct the situation.
Air accident investigator Frank Russell said the pilot hit the ground sooner than intended and the aircraft “effectively cart-wheeled on its right wing”.
The report says a controls check before take-off indicated they were working but a bolt from the flap controls was missing when the wreckage was examined.
The pilot and his passenger suffered multiple injuries and the wooden-built aircraft, considered to be a classic, vintage aircraft, was destroyed.
