Man charged with murdering Cork woman

A 49-year-old part-time painter and decorator has been remanded in custody after he was charged yesterday with the murder of a 60-year-old woman whose body was found buried in woodland in west Cork earlier this year.

Oliver Hayes from Clancool Terrace, Bandon, appeared before a special sitting of Bandon District Court yesterday where he was charged with the murder of Anne Corcoran on a date between January 19th and January 23rd in Co Cork.

Mrs Corcoran, from Maulnaskimlehane in Kilbrittain, was last seen alive on the evening of January 18th. Her disappearance triggered a major search involving hundreds of gardaí and civilians before her body was found near Garrettstown on February 6th.

Yesterday, Det Garda Jim Fitzgerald gave evidence of arresting and charging Mr Hayes with the offence, and told the court the accused’s reply to the charge after caution was: “I’m sorry for what happened, I never meant for her to die.”

State solicitor Malachy Boohig applied to have Mr Hayes remanded in custody to appear again at Kinsale District Court on May 7th.

Hospital may outsource laundry

Concern has been expressed over possible job losses at Letterkenny hospital after it announced it was considering outsourcing laundry services.

Hospital manager Seán Murphy said the services were being reviewed in light of last year’s Health Information and Quality Authority report “which identified significant issues with the condition of the current facility”.

Sinn Féin councillor Gerry McMonagle said he was “concerned that this is just the thin edge of the wedge”.
