Gerald Barry (29), with an address at Rosan Glas, Rahoon, Galway, received a life sentence for the murder of the 17-year-old student after a seven-day trial before a jury in the Central Criminal Court last March.

It is understood Ms Riedo’s parents will not be travelling to Galway for the inquest.

Legal argument in murder trial

There was a day of legal argument in the absence of the jury yesterday at the trial of a man accused of murdering an 83-year-old pensioner in Westmeath last year.

Noel Cawley (47), of no fixed abode but with a previous address in Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Christy Hanley at his home on Bridge Street, Kilbeggan, Co Westmeath, on May 21st last year.

He has also pleaded not guilty to robbing Mr Hanley of an unknown sum of money at the same address on the same date.

It is the prosecution’s case that Mr Cawley tied Mr Hanley up, robbed him and beat him to death.

The trial will resume this morning.

Residential school place offered to boy

A place is available in a State-funded residential school for a severely physically and intellectually disabled boy at the centre of a High Court case over his care.

John Christopher Collins (11) has very complex needs and is prone to violent outbursts in the absence of specialised care, the court had heard. His parents John and Orla, from Blackrock in Dublin, had funded treatment for him in the May Institute clinic in Boston.

They had to return home after a year and a half, having exhausted their funds.

Having failed to secure assurances the HSE would fund his treatment at the facility, the parents took proceedings to require the HSE, the Ministers for Health and Education and the National Council for Special Education to provide appropriate care.

Yesterday the court was told a place was available in St Catherine’s Association Ltd, Newcastle, Co Wicklow.

Gerard Hogan SC, for the parents, said they were “on the horns of a dilemma” because they had been told extra funding was required to provide more special needs staffing.

He asked that injunction proceedings be adjourned to June 16th given the uncertainties.

Remand in extradition case

A man whose extradition is being sought by the UK authorities in connection with the shooting dead of a soldier in Derby more than 17 years ago has been again remanded on bail at the High Court.

The British authorities are seeking the extradition of Anthony Patrick Gorman (39), with an address at Beckett Court View, Bailieborough, Co Cavan, for the murder of Sgt Michael Newman in Derby on April 13th, 1992.

Yesterday Mr Justice Michael Peart remanded Mr Gorman to appear before the High Court on June 17th.
