Five in hospital after two-car crash

Gardai in Roscrea are investigating the circumstances of a serious road traffic collision on the N7 Dublin to Limerick road yesterday evening.

Two cars were involved in the crash, which took place about two miles outside Roscrea on the Dublin side of the town, at about 7.30 pm.

In one car there were two women and a man, in the other two men and a woman, gardaí said last night.

Five of the injured were taken to Portlaoise and one to Tullamore Hospital. Two of the injured were believed to be serious, gardaí said.

The road remained closed last night and diversions were in place. Garda Forensic Collision Investigators were at the scene.

Extradition hearing for priest delayed

A US judge has postponed an extradition hearing for an Irish priest charged with sexually abusing a minor, giving his lawyer more time to research Irish law.

Ireland wants to extradite Fr Francis Markey (81), of South Bend, Indiana, originally from the Catholic diocese of Clogher, on charges that he twice raped a boy in 1968 in Ireland.

After a week in the St Joseph county jail, Fr Markey was released on Monday on a $10,000 cash bond.

Judge Christopher Neuchterlein ordered the hearing adjourned until December 10th, on a motion from Fr Markey’s lawyer.

€2.5m award over brain damage

A woman who suffered severe brain damage due to the alleged mismanagement of her epileptic condition has secured €2.5 million damages in settlement of her High Court action against the Health Service Executive.

The settlement was without admission of liability.

Ingrid Walsh (39), who sued through her mother, Mary Walsh, Grange Heights, Waterford, alleged her injuries resulted from delays in dealing with a seizure in September 2005 and failure to refer her to a consultant neurosurgeon in time.

It was claimed Ms Walsh, who was born with spina bifida, had an epileptic fit on September 6th, 2006, while in Waterford Regional Hospital.

€31m awarded for accidents at work

Three out of four employer liability claims were awarded to men last year, according to figures from InjuriesBoard.ie.

A total of €31.4 million in compensation was awarded in respect of 972 workplace accidents in 2008, with more than half of these occurring in the construction and manufacturing sectors.

The largest causes of workplace accidents reviewed were slips, trips and falls.
