Man found not guilty of sex abuse
A 59-year-old man has been found not guilty of sexually abusing three nieces by a jury at Dundalk Circuit Criminal Court during the 1980s and 1990s.
The three, who are sisters and now in their 20s, told the court he had abused them at locations in Co Louth including a workshop.
Two of them said they had been abused with the butt of a rifle that their uncle kept in the workshop and one of them told the jury she had been abused with part of an electric sander and the handle of a screwdriver. They all said their private parts had also been touched by him.
When interviewed he told gardaí the allegations were a "tissue of lies".
After four hours of deliberations the jury last evening delivered not guilty verdicts on all 14 charges. Earlier in the day the judge directed that he be found not guilty on two other charges.
GAA player to appeal sentence
A GAA player is to appear before a court in May to appeal a two-month jail sentence imposed after he was found guilty of failing to give blood or urine samples to gardaí when he was stopped on suspicion of drunk driving.
Teddy McCarthy (42), Woodbrook, Castlejane, Glanmire, Co Cork, was sentenced to two months last September at a sitting of Cobh District Court. In addition he was convicted of dangerous driving and failing to produce insurance when stopped by gardaí at Riverstown Cross, Glanmire on November 21st 2006.
An appeal was due to be heard at Midleton Circuit Court yesterday but it was adjourned until May 27th because a vital witness was too ill to give evidence.
Sentence in stolen cars case adjourned
A Meath man who was part of a gang selling stolen cars by pretending they worked for a repossession company has had his sentence adjourned in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Edward Stafford (52), of Main Street, Julianstown, pleaded guilty to two counts of handling stolen cars at Kealy's Pub, Swords, in September 2005.
Gardaí observed the purchase of a Mercedes in the pub's car park and when Stafford drove in gardaí arrested him and charged him with handling four stolen cars.
File on Riedo murder for DPP
Detectives investigating the murder of Swiss student Manuela Riedo (17) have completed their investigation and the file is to go to the DPP next week. Harristown District Court at Castlerea Prison heard yesterday that there could be more than 200 witnesses in the case.
Gerald Barry (27), Rosan Glas, Rahoon, Galway, who is accused of her murder, was remanded in custody to February 15th.
Ms Riedo's body was found at Lough Atalia on the morning of October 9th, and a postmortem found she had died of asphyxiation.
10 years jail for drugs' possession
A father of seven who smoked cannabis to relieve chronic neck pain has been jailed for 10 years for transporting €19,000 worth of the drug because he was €100 "in debt" to criminals.
Gabriel Redmond (44), Brookview Walk, Tallaght, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of the drugs for sale or supply on Old Bawn Road on April 6th, 2005.
