Judge named for position in High Court
The Government has nominated Daniel O'Keeffe SC for appointment by the President as a judge of the High Court. This follows the retirement of Mr Justice Thomas Smith.
Mr O'Keeffe practised on the Dublin and South Western circuits specialising in company and taxation law and also has wide experience in administrative law, judicial reviews, and commercial law. He chaired the public service benchmarking body.
Mr O'Keeffe qualified as a barrister in 1964 and took silk in 1985. He is a qualified accountant as well as a barrister.
Manslaughter case deferred
The daughter and son-in-law of Evelyn Joel, who died in Wexford in 2006, had their case adjourned until next sessions at Wexford Circuit Criminal Court yesterday.
Eleanor Joel and her partner Jonathon Costen, of Cluain Dara, Enniscorthy, were charged with manslaughter and reckless endangerment after the death of Mrs Joel in January 2006.
Evelyn Joel died aged 58 in Wexford General Hospital on the first weekend of 2006 after being admitted from the house in which she was living in Enniscorthy.
She was found in an upstairs bedroom of the house and was believed to be suffering from extreme malnutrition.
Prisoner had mobile phones A trusted inmate who smuggled mobile phones and drugs into Mountjoy Prison, Dublin, has been given a three-year suspended sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Kenneth Owens (32) had been collecting the items when he visited his sick girlfriend's house while under the supervision of prison officers.
Owens, a father of seven, Rutland Avenue, Crumlin, pleaded guilty to possession of mobile phones with intent that they would come into the possession of another person and also to having cannabis resin at Mountjoy on November 21st, 2005.
Jail suspended for stabbing
A depressed woman who stabbed her former fiance in the back as he slept has been given a two-year suspended sentence by Judge Martin Nolan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Anne Lawlor (43) became engaged to Dutch investment banker Hans Beckmann after meeting him when she worked in Shanahans on the Green, Dublin, but she became depressed when the engagement ended.
Lawlor, St Vincent's Street South, Dublin 8, pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Beckmann causing him harm at Merrion Woods, Stillorgan, on October 23rd, 2006, by stabbing him with a knife from his own collection.
Apology in camera case
A young girl wrongly accused of not paying for a €5 camera yesterday settled her €38,000 damages claim against Pound City, Square Shopping Centre, Tallaght.
The amount of the settlement was not disclosed but counsel for Rachel D'Arcy, told the Circuit Civil Court that the compensation was accompanied by "a wholesome apology".
Ms D'Arcy (19) Dromcarra Ave, Jobstown, was 13 when a security man followed her into Boots chemists on December 23rd 2002 and told her out loud she had forgotten to pay for the camera in Pound City.
