US honour for top cancer surgeon

A PAST president of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland has been awarded an honorary fellowship by the American College of Surgeons, joining an elite group of 413 surgeons who have received the honour over the last 95 years, writes Olivia Kelleher.

The director of the Cork Cancer Research Centre, Prof Gerry O'Sullivan, was one of five surgeons awarded honorary fellowships in San Francisco.

Prof O'Sullivan said that he was very proud.

"The American College of Surgeons is one of the most prestigious medical organisations in the world and it is a great honour to receive this award."

Prof O'Sullivan has been instrumental in making the Cork Cancer Research Centre one of the leading cancer research centres in Europe.

Man held over fatal hit-and-run

A 21-year-old man was yesterday being questioned by gardaí about a hit-and-run incident in which a 26-year-old man died.

The man was being detained at Bailieboro Garda station, following the death of Jonathon Heagney in Co Cavan on Saturday.

The body of Mr Heagney, from Aughnagar, Galbally, Dungannon, Co Tyrone was found at 2pm on the Carrickmacross Road outside Kingscourt.

Woman dies after Co Galway crash

Gardaí have not yet named the 42-year-old woman who died following a three-car crash at Recess, Co Galway on Sunday.

The woman's car collided with another car on the N59 shortly after 5pm.

Man admits Belfast killing

An east Belfast man yesterday admitted the unlawful killing of a 34-year-old father of two whose dismembered body was found in a bin in August last year.

Mark Anthony Warwick (43) pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of William McClatchey on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

Mr McClatchey's body was discovered in a bin at the back of Warwick's home last August. Sentence was adjourned until next month.
