Jockey settles brain injury court action

A jockey who sued a horse trainer over brain injuries allegedly sustained in a riding accident has settled his High Court action for more than €500,000; his wife is to receive €100,000. The settlement was without admission of liability.

Anthony Meagher, a "vastly experienced" jockey, suffered serious head injuries after he fell from a horse which had collapsed as he was riding it while employed with Tipperary-based trainer Thomas Keating.

Mr Meagher (43), Grange, Clonmel, Co Tipperary, alleged negligence and breach of duty against Mr Keating, Nicholastown, Grange.

The claims were denied and the defence also pleaded contributory negligence.

Union leader seeks injunction

The general president of the building workers trade union, Batu, will today seek a High Court injunction to stop his being suspended.

Michael McNally (69), Belgium Park, Monaghan, is seeking to restrain the union's national executive council from moving a motion at a meeting tomorrow to suspend him or prevent him carrying out his role.

Oisín Quinn, for Mr McNally, yesterday got permission from Ms Justice Mary Laffoy to notify Batu of his intention to seek an injunction.

Mr Quinn said the grounds on which the suspension was being sought included claims that Mr McNally has failed to fulfil his duties of office and is guilty of misconduct. Mr McNally "absolutely rejected" such claims.

Brothel-keeper's hearing adjourned

A convicted brothel- keeper has had a hearing about possible confiscation by the State of his assets adjourned to allow required documentation to be prepared by legal teams.

Martin Morgan (44) is serving a three-year sentence following conviction last February of organising prostitution and running a brothel at an apartment on Bachelor's Walk, Dublin, from August 22nd to October 10th, 2005.

Girl (16) accuses father of rape

A 16-year-old Roscommon schoolgirl has told a Central Criminal Court jury that her father sexually assaulted and raped her over three years.

Her 68-year-old father has pleaded not guilty to 80 counts of rape and sexual assault between 2003 and 2006. The victim gave evidence by video-link and said of the first assaults occurred when she was nine.

Stepfather tried for sexual assault

A south Dublin man accused of sexually assaulting his 14-year-old stepdaughter for over a year has gone on trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

The now 19-year-old complainant said her stepfather had come into her bedroom and touched her while her mother, his wife, was working. She said the abuse eventually progressed to sexual intercourse.

The man has pleaded not guilty to eight counts of sexual assault between August 2002 and September 2003 at their family home.

Man has 26,750 confiscated

A Co Louth man has had €26,750 of his money confiscated and forfeited to the State at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Seán Gillane, prosecuting, told the court that Declan Gernon, Farnderg Estate, Dundalk, "was not opposing the application".
