Inquiry on PSNI baton rounds

The Police Ombudsman is investigating how a 75-year-old man came to be shot with two new-style PSNI "baton rounds" yesterday, writes Dan Keenan. The shooting happened in the early hours after the police were called out to Ballybeen, east Belfast. The man was struck by two Attenuating Energy Projectiles (AEPs), which the Policing Board approved three years ago.

The police said they attended "a firearms incident" and found a man acting erratically. They opened fire with AEPs.

Not seriously hurt, he was taken for police questioning after a health check.

Separately, residents had to move from homes in the Burns Road area of Cookstown, east Tyrone, after the discovery of what British army experts called a "viable" explosive device. They returned home later.
