Polish man stabbed in his apartment

Gardaí investigating the stabbing of a Polish man (25) in Cork at the weekend say they are following a definite line of inquiry.

Gardaí believe the man returned to his apartment off Camden Quay in the city centre to discover that a number of people were there without his permission. He ordered them to leave but one man later returned and attacked him.

He was stabbed in the arm and his condition in hospital was yesterday described as "stable".

An Irish man in his 30s suffered less serious injuries in the same incident.

Man accused of having firearms

A man charged with armed robbery of a jeweller's shop has been further charged with possession of nine firearms and more than 2,500 rounds of ammunition.

Liam Foley (23), Graiguenamanagh, Co Kilkenny, appeared before Kilkenny District Court yesterday.

Mr Foley was arrested after gardaí seized up to €500,000 worth of jewellery and a number of rifles and handguns at his home in Graiguenamanagh following a five-hour siege.

He was remanded in custody to appear in court again next Tuesday.

Dingle festival looks to Africa

The 14th annual Féile na Bealtaine arts and politics festival in Dingle/An Daingean, Co Kerry, begins tomorrow with an African theme.

The festival promotes the heritage of the Corca Dhuibhne peninsula and seeks to introduce the culture and politics of other regions.

The May bank holiday political symposium will focus on Africa. Kerry is twinned with the mountain kingdom of Lesotho and a number of education and economic exchanges are already under way. Speakers will include the Irish ambassador to Lesotho.
