Remand for man accused of murder

A Dublin man accused of murder has been remanded on bail for a month for service of his book of evidence in Kilmainham Court. Martin Toland is also accused of the attempted murder of another man. The families of both victims were present for the hearing.

Following public order problems at a previous remand hearing, there was an extensive Garda presence yesterday both inside and outside the court, including a number of armed detectives.

Mr Toland (32), Walkinstown Park, is charged with murdering Alan Nolan (28), attempting to murder James Carroll, assaulting Mr Nolan causing him harm and assaulting Mr Carroll causing him harm, all at an address at Cedarbrook Walk, Ballyfermot, on September 8th last year.

Date set for Mulhall trial

The trial of Kathleen Mulhall on charges arising from the killing of her boyfriend Fareh Swaleh Noor has been set for February 19th next. Ms Mulhall (54), St Mary's Park, Carlow, faces nine charges: that she withheld information, helped clean up a crime scene, five counts of giving false information over Mr Noor's whereabouts, and two counts of pretending she did not know his whereabouts.

Mr Justice Paul Carney set the date when the case was called in the Central Criminal Court at Dublin yesterday. Ms Mulhall's daughters, Linda and Charlotte, are serving sentences for killing Mr Noor whose dismembered body were found in the Royal Canal in Dublin in 2005.

Legal argument in corruption trial

The corruption trial of George Redmond at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court has continued in legal argument and the hearing of evidence is expected to resume today.

Mr Redmond (83), College Gate, Castleknock, Dublin, a former assistant county manager, has pleaded not guilty to two charges arising out of a compulsory purchase order on 167 acres of land at Buzzardstown and Coolmine, Co Dublin.

He denies receiving £10,000 from the late Fianna Fáil councillor, Patrick Dunne, between October 10th, 1985 and June 26th, 1989, as an inducement in respect of the compulsory purchase order.

Man admits having rifle

A Dublin man has pleaded guilty at the Special Criminal Court to having a Kalashnikov assault rifle and ammunition in the city centre last November.

Denis Dwyer (23), a plumber, Drumcarra Avenue, Jobstown, Tallaght, admitted the unlawful possession of a Kalashnikov assault rifle and 21 rounds of ammunition at Camden Street on November 22nd last.

Dwyer was remanded yesterday in continuing custody until next month.

Convicted of attack on girl (14)

A Wexford man has been convicted of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old baby-sitter in his sister's home but cleared on a second charge of raping her on the same occasion, in November 2006.

The verdicts were delivered following about two hours deliberation by the jury on day four of the trial at the Central Criminal Court.

Mr Justice Paul Carney directed the preparation of a victim impact statement and remanded the man on continuing bail for sentence later. The 30-year-old man had pleaded not guilty.
