Man arrested before Army unit disposes of explosive device
The Army's bomb disposal unit was called to an isolated part of Dublin to dispose of a "viable" explosive device after gardaí used a Taser weapon during the arrest of a man.
The man, aged in his late 20s, was arrested during a planned operation by members of the Garda's Emergency Response Unit, on Pigeon House Road in Ringsend, on Dublin Bay.
The explosive device - understood to be a pipe bomb - was discovered during the arrest.
The Army's bomb disposal unit was called to the scene shortly after 2pm yesterday, said a Defence Forces spokesman, and the device was made safe and removed from the site five hours later. "It was a viable device," said the spokesman.
The arrested man was detained at Blackrock Garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. Under the Act he can be held for up to 72 hours.
EMI pulls plug on Dublin 'Beauty'
A musical adaptation of Sleeping Beauty which was due to have its world premiere at the Gaiety Theatre later this month will not be taking to the Dublin stage due to "circumstances occurring with investors", writes Steven Carroll.
The musical will open in London's West End later this year, where it was due to receive a run after the Dublin shows.
A spokeswoman said that amidst worldwide cost-cutting measures financiers EMI records were unable to provide full funding for the musical as required by its producers.
Members of the Dublin cast will be offered roles in the rescheduled production.
Sleeping Beauty producer John Ward said: "Dublin was always our first choice for the world premier and I am deeply disappointed that we are unable to proceed . . . I apologise to all theatre-goers who are disappointed."
