Garda warning after scenesin courtroom
Gardaí had to restore order in the Central Criminal Court after friends and relatives of a Dublin father who was acquitted of raping and sexually assaulting his daughter celebrated openly.
Supporters of the 39-year-old accused man shouted and applauded after the court registrar noted the "not guilty" verdicts against him. They were ordered by gardaí to stop or leave.
The accused man had denied three charges of raping his now 19-year-old daughter in 2006, and 36 charges of sexually abusing her on dates from May 1996 to January 2006.
Bail for wife on murder charge
A 54-year-old woman charged with the murder of her husband has been released on bail.
Ann Burke is charged with murdering Pat Burke (55) at the couple's home in Ballybrittas, Co Laois, last August.
Mr Burke died from multiple blows to the head with a blunt instrument.
His body was discovered in a downstairs bedroom of the family home after gardaí called to the house on the night of Sunday, August
19th. Mother-of-four Ms Burke appeared before Portlaoise District Court yesterday.
She was granted bail on her own surety of €1,000 and ordered to appear at Portarlington District Court on July 1st.
Legal argument in Redmond trial
The £10,000 corruption trial of George Redmond continued yesterday on day eight of the hearing in legal argument in the absence of the jury at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Mr Redmond (83), of College Gate, Castleknock, a former assistant city and county manager, has pleaded not guilty to two charges arising out of a compulsory purchase order on 167 acres of land at Buzzardstown and Coolmine, in northwest Co Dublin.
Judge Joseph Matthews has requested the jury to return to court on Monday morning.
Bus rock attack case adjourned
The case of a teenager, who allegedly broke a woman's skull when he threw a rock at a bus, has been adjourned by the Dublin Children's Court to allow a judge consider findings of a psychiatric report.
The rock smashed through the window of a Dublin Bus and hit a passenger who was seriously injured and hospitalised for a week, it is alleged.
The boy (17) has been charged with assault causing harm to the woman, who is in her 30s, and criminal
damage to the bus, at Green Road, in Blanchardstown, Dublin, on February 3rd last year.
The Director of Public Prosecutions has held that the Children's Court was to decide whether the case should be retained there or instead be sent forward to the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, which, on conviction, can impose lengthier sentences.
Two legal firms win awards
Two Irish legal firms have been honoured at the inaugural Chambers Europe Awards. McCann FitzGerald won the award for best firm in Ireland at a ceremony in Barcelona on Thursday night, while BCM Hanby Wallace won the Irish client service award.
The awards are organised by Chambers and Partners legal publishers.
