Warning on water risk in Co Limerick

Residents in Bruff, Co Limerick, have been advised not to drink water from the town's main public supply.

Limerick County Council's water services authority issued the drinking water notice yesterday on the advice of the Health Service Executive after low levels of lead were detected in water supplies in some town centre premises.

Two helplines, 061-496326 (9.30am-4.30pm) and 061- 419226 (after hours), have been set up to advise people in the affected areas.

The council's senior water services engineer, Donal Brennan, said staff would conduct further tests this week. He warned locals in the affected area not to drink water from the main supply and to ensure that ice cubes in fridges and freezers were discarded.

Ó Riada archive opens at UCC

The archive of Irish language activist and composer Seán Ó Riada at University College Cork has been made available to researchers for the first time.

Since the death of Ó Riada in 1971, his family has been assiduous in preserving his papers, both personal and work-related. The archive has been transferred to the Boole Library at UCC to ensure it is preserved and made accessible to the research community.

Appeal delays Mayo airport work

Work on an extension to the terminal building at Ireland West Airport Knock has been delayed following an objection to the development lodged with An Bord Pleanála.

Environmentalist Peter Sweetman has appealed the decision by Mayo County Council to grant planning permission for the work, part of a €20 million upgrade planned for the Co Mayo facility this year.

Healy-Rae to lose salmon rod licence

Mayor of Kerry Michael Healy-Rae is to lose his authorisation to sell salmon rod licences in his home village of Kilgarvan because he has failed to reach his quota. South Western Regional Fisheries Board chief executive Aidan Barry said there was a limit to the number of licence distributors in Kerry and Cork and their annual authorisations were not renewed if sales fell below a certain threshold.

Reception for chief justice

Chief Justice John Murray is to receive a civic reception in his native Limerick next week. Mayor of Limerick Ger Fahy and the members of Limerick City Council will honour Mr Justice Murray at City Hall on January 21st next.

Craftworkers seek premises in Kerry

Craftworkers at an Údarás na Gaeltachta craft village in Dingle, Co Kerry, say they have no place to go after being told to quit the workshops they have occupied in some cases for more than seven years.

Údarás has applied to Kerry County Council for planning permission to convert the units into a business park. It says it has done everything it could to assist the tenants.
