PSNI murder inquiry into man's death

The PSNI has launched a murder inquiry after a 71-year-old man who was attacked died in hospital yesterday. Francis Lyttle, known to friends and family as Gerry, received serious head injuries in a vicious attack in the Churchill Park area of Portadown on November 1st. He died at Lurgan Hospital.

A 17-year-old youth appeared in court charged with attempted murder following the attack.

A postmortem examination will be carried out before a decision is taken on whether to amend the charges.

Siblings buried after road deaths

Hundreds of people attended the funerals in Aghayaran, Co Tyrone, yesterday of a sister and brother who were killed in a road crash close to their family home in the early hours of Saturday.

Emma (13) and Eamon (11) Sweeney were killed instantly when a car driven by their mother Sharon collided with an oncoming car near Victoria Bridge on the main Strabane to Castlederg road. The victims' younger brother Paul survived the crash.

Yesterday's funeral was delayed by two days to enable Mrs Sweeney to be discharged from Altnagelvin Hospital to attend the funerals of her daughter and son.

The driver of the other car involved in the head-on crash, Jonathan Millar (18), from Artigarvan near Strabane, was buried on Tuesday.

Meath taxi driver takes top award

A man who went from house to house to get a doctor for a passenger who collapsed in his cab has been named Ireland's Taxi Driver of the Year.

Declan Hegarty, from Clonee, Co Meath, managed to locate a doctor near a medical centre in Finglas. Dr John Curtin took the man into the medical centre and revived him.

Mr Hegarty was presented with his award at the first Taxi Driver of the Year Awards sponsored by Taxi Timesat Dublin's Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Crew brought ashore in Dingle

Eighteen Spanish crew from the sunken ship the Royalist were brought ashore into Dingle, Co Kerry, yesterday after being rescued from life rafts 170 miles off Loop Head.

They were brought to their lodgings and given a change of clothes. The crew were being interviewed by marine accident investigators last night. Arrangements are being made to fly them home.
