Boy (4) drowns after falling into river
A four-year-old boy drowned yesterday after he fell into the River Fergus in Ennis, Co Clare.
He was recovered after a search by emergency services. The boy fell into the water near the Aughanterroe housing estate on the Gort Road at around 5.30pm.
The fire service, gardaí, Civil Defence, Doolin Coast Guard and the Shannon- based coast guard helicopter took part in the search. The boy was taken from the water at around 6.15pm and rushed to Ennis General Hospital.
He was pronounced dead at 8.05pm. A postmortem will take place later today.
Four killed in road crashes
FOUR PEOPLE were killed in three separate road crashes in counties Cork, Offaly and Galway, at the weekend. A 23-year-old man died yesterday following a car crash in Co Cork at midnight on Saturday.
Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman in a two-car collision in Connemara on Saturday night. The woman was killed instantly when her car collided with another vehicle at Minna, Inverin on the coast road between Galway and Connemara shortly after 10pm. The woman has been named locally as Mary Dillane, a nurse and mother. She was travelling alone at the time. Gardaí in Salthill are appealing for witnesses.
A man and a woman, both aged about 20, were killed in a road crash in Co Offaly on Saturday. The single-vehicle crash took place at Doon Cross, Ballinahowen, Co Offaly at 4.40am.
Woman released without charge
A woman arrested over the weekend in connection with dissident republican activities, was yesterday released without charge.
She was one of three people arrested in Dundalk, Co Louth on Saturday.
A firearm and a quantity of ammunition were recovered during the operation by gardaí. Two men, one in his 40s and the other in his 20s, were last night still being held at Dundalk Garda Station.
Tributes paid to Sarah Conlon
Tributes were paid yesterday to Belfast woman Sarah Conlon - whose late husband Giuseppe and son Gerry were wrongly convicted in connection with the Guildford IRA bombings - who died on Saturday aged 82. Ms Conlon, who campaigned for the release of her husband and the Guildford Four - her son Gerry, Paul Hill, Carole Richardson and Paddy Armstrong - was described by her son as a remarkable and forgiving woman.
The four spent 15 years in prison after they were wrongfully convicted of the 1975 IRA bombings in Guildford which killed five people. The Maguire Seven - members and friends of the Maguire family, including Giuseppe Conlon - were convicted of running a bomb factory. Giuseppe Conlon died in prison. Three years ago Tony Blair publicly apologised to the families.
Men held over cannabis find
Four men were arrested on Saturday after 100 cannabis plants were seized at two properties on the Portadown Road in Armagh.
